AbstractMePIS system ensures complete management of production and efficiency in food-processing company Droga Kolinska. Its high-level configurability and personalization enabled Droga Kolinska to implement uniform SAP system for seven plants across Slovenia and one in Bosnia and Hercegovina.

Problem DefinitionModern food-processing companies can respond to market requirements and develop their competitive position only with technologically advanced and efficient production processes which are adjustable and ensure high quality of products. Good practices show that food-processing companies with an implemented MES system have an important advantage and easily achieve their strategic goals for production. Droga Kolinska is a global company which manufactures and trades high quality food products of recognized trademarks. It competitive position builds with investments in informatization of the production process. On the segment of MES Droga Kolinska has defined two key fields:
- assurance of complete tracking in the entire food-processing chain and
- management of production efficiency
Their goal was to develop an information system which would accomplish what was defined.Due to our experience and knowledge of the food and beverage branch, our internal development department and project orientation, Droga Kolinska has entrusted this task to us. We decided to use MX-Frame.
SolutionMePIS, Our solution for the food-processing branch called was configured according to the requirements of Droga Kolinska and deployed in seven (7) plants across Slovenia and one in Bosnia and Hercegovina. MePIS ensures complete production process management with emphasis on genealogy, quality and efficiency. Accordance with of ISA SP95 guidelines, it is connected with the SAP system and the warehouse system SKLADKO. MePIS ensures execution of the production process with electronic work-orders and automatic recording of all material transaction, process and environmental parameters. The material genealogy is ensured with automatic labelling of the products. Beside genealogy and quality MePIS also supports efficiency management (OEE metrics) and is harmonized with the HACCP standard requirements. MePIS system was developed with MX-Frame, which enables easy interaction with other information systems (SAP, SKLADKO) through different protocols (web services, database, etc.). MX-Frame runtime flexibility allowed us to develop generic user interfaces which can be personalized by end-users, and its ability to develop applications enabled us to develop and deploy the system in the shortest possible time.
ResultsIn the beginning of 2006, Droga Kolinska started the project of modernization of key information systems. Parallel with the implementation of business system SAP, the MePIS system was also deployed in all plants (7) in Slovenia and one in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The project was completed on 1.1.2007. The results showed on the following:
- With integration of MePIS system in production process, Droga Kolinska met all product quality and safety requirements demanded by European regulations and consumers.
- Droga Kolinska increased its competitive position with better flexibility, efficiency and quicker decision making achieved with accurate and up-to-date status of production ensured by MePIS. With active management policy they achieved a 20% reduction of down-times and better availability of production devices.
- With the configurable solution based on MX-Frame it was possible to cover all specificities of technologically demanding and different plants in the Droga Kolinska group. This enabled the company to implement a uniform SAP system for all locations and more up-to-date and accurate data for business analysis.
- Based on MX-Frame, MePIS ensures centralised administration, maintenance, and simple spreading on other production plants outside Slovenia.
- With automatic recording of events linked with packing-suppliers Droga Kolinska has increased quality of packing material and lowered the costs for 10%
